‘Back Door Sentencing’ in Italy: Common Reasons and Main Consequences for the Recall of Prisoners
2012
Italian law only provides the general conditions for the institution of recall. It follows that significant discretionary powers are enjoyed by the surveillance judges (and in particular by the Surveillance Tribunal) who evaluate on a case-by-case basis whether the commission of another offence or the infringement of parole conditions demonstrate the offenders' negative attitude to reintegrate into society. However, especially with reference to the commission of serious crimes, the judges' discretionary assessment can result in a restrictive application of the law on recall with the consequence that parolees are returned to prison even when they commit minor violations. Clinical and metabolic findings in a 6-year-old boy with a Leydig cell tumour
2011
Aim: To analyse the urinary steroid metabolome in a boy who had true precocious puberty after a Leydig cell tumour. Method: Case report and detailed description of clinical and metabolic findings in a 7-year-old-boy with a Leydig cell tumour. Results: Before surgery, the urinary steroid metabolome showed an activation of an alternative route to gonadal androgens independent of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). After surgery, the boy entered true precocious puberty. Under leuprolide acetate treatment, clinical and laboratory findings normalized. Conclusion: Central precocious puberty after precocious pseudopuberty may be more common than expected and should be considered in children with pe…
Torrential precipitations on the Spanish east coast: The role of the Mediterranean sea surface temperature
1995
Abstract Floods constitute one of the most important natural risks on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. Although it is very difficult to avoid them, a correct understanding of their principal cause, which is torrential rain, can facilitate their prediction and in this way avoid, at least partially, their catastrophic effects (both loss of human lives and material damage). The work presented here is part of a more extensive study underway in the CEAM (Centro de Estudios Ambientales del Mediterraneo). Its objective is the analysis of the conditions that produce torrential precipitations. These can be explained by the hypothesis of the Back Door Front, a mechanism which on its own permits the d…
